Fabrication and Characterization of N-doped CVD graphene-based gas sensors for NO2 gas sensing applications

Nitrogen dioxide is a harmful air pollutant that originates from transportation and industry. It has been linked with a range of respiratory diseases. There is a large need for ppb-level sensors that can detect the low concentration that already can cause averse health effects.

Graphene is a material of interest for this application. Due its large specific area and low noise, it can theoretically detect ppt levels of NO2. Furthermore, it can operate at low temperature and hence has a low power consumption. However, selectivity, recovery and response time are still unresolved issues. Nitrogen-doped graphene can be of interest to solve these issues.

Assignment

You will investigate the realization of nitrogen-doped graphene by changing the deposition parameters. The materials will be analyzed with characterisation techniques like Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, etc. Furthermore, devices will be electrically characterised and tested in our gas sensor setup.

Requirements

You are a student with an interest in material synthesis and analysis and the realization of electrical sensors. The project will last 9 or 12 months.
