MSc thesis project proposal

In situ sintering kinetics of nano/micro-scale particles

Microstructure in nanoscale and microscale determines the properties of a material. In this project, you are expected to observe the sintering process of metal particles under SEM to obtain kinetic parameters. This is very important for predicting microstructure. Exploring the nano- and micro-level material manufacturing mechanism will help promoting the further development of microelectronic device integration.

Assignment

The expected activities to be carried out by the student are:

  • Literature review to know the state of the art of die-attach materials.
  • In-situ experiments to obtain kinetic parameters.
  • Investigate the size effect of metal particles.
  • Use existing models to simulate the thermal or mechanical properties of the material and compare them with experimental results.

The student will perform the assignment at ECTM:

  • Duration: ~9 months.

Requirements

You are an ambitious student and have a microelectronics, physics, or material science background and an interest in experiment and simulation. Experience with programming is highly recommended. Good communication skills in English and a proactive attitude are expected.
